How Can I Add the Religion of an Individual? Is it important?

On many headstones, there will be religious symbols such as a Christian Cross, a Jewish Star of David, or the Islamic Star and Crescent, that signify a specific religion.  This will allow you to choose a religion for the individual.

Most US Military Headstones will have the religion of the soldier's choice on the stone.   This is where BillionGraves gets its list of Religious Icons from; the US National Cemetery Administration, Emblems of Belief.

Although it can add depth to the research of an individual, adding religion to non-US Military stones is not necessary.

Directions for adding Religion to the stone:

  • Adding the religion is optional.

  • If you do choose to add the religion, select the religious icon from the dropdown menu that matches the religious icon on the gravestone.

  • If no religious icon appears on the gravestone, leave this field blank.

There are two methods to add Hebrew Dates to the form:

Direction 1: To permanently add Religion to all transcriptions.

Step 1: To add religion, to the transcription currently being worked on and all future transcriptions, choose the "form settings" box under the transcription form. Once chosen, the "Choose Religion" box will appear under the dates of birth and death.

Step 2: Click on the "choose religion" box.  If the icon is not on the list provided on the form, skip adding the religion altogether.

Step 3: Select the tab button to advance to the next field on the transcription form.

Direction 2: To add Religion to the current transcription form.

Step 1: To add religion to the transcription in the current form only, choose the "add more information" button.
